The brake master cylinder is responsible for taking the mechanical energy from the brake pedal input and transferring it to hydraulic energy providing hydraulic pressure to all 4 wheels. While not a typical maintenance item, a brake master cylinder can wear out and fail most commonly due to worn out internal seals.
