Product Information

This kit is designed to change the fluids on the complete drivetrain on your Volvo, which should be done every 30-40k miles.

Services:

Volvo does not specifically have service intervals for these, instead citing a "lifetime fill". In our experience, drivetrain components begin to degrade in performance and fail between 150k and 200k miles, so it is critical to regularly change these drivetrain oils to avoid shear and breakdown.

Procedure:

  • Automatic Transmission: Typically each drain will remove around 3l. 4l of fluid should be added and drained meaning it will briefly be slightly overfull during fluid mixing. This kit comes with enough fluid to do 2 drain and fills. For a more complete service, add an additional 4l. Final fluid level should be set while the transmission temperature is warm (50-60C) with engine running on a level surface.   • Transfer Case/Bevel Gear/Angle Gear: Locate and remove the plug on the transfer case, located near the lower engine mount and turbo pressure pipe elbow. Use the syringe to evacuate out as much as possible, and fill the same way. Replace the plug with the new seal when continuous flow out of the hole changes into single drops.
  • Torque: Oil filler plug, bevel gear, 35 Nm
  • Rear differential: Locate and remove the plug on the rearward ridged driveshaft flange. Use the syringe to evacuate out as much as possible, and fill the same way. Replace the plug with the new seal when continuous flow out of the hole changes into single drops.
  • Torque: Oil plug, final drive, 35 Nm
  • Clean the syringe of gear oil.
  • Haldex/AOC: Locate the plug on the side of the differential where the Haldex interfaces with the differential case. It will be a smooth area directly ahead of the ridged driveshaft flange. Use the syringe to evacuate out as much as possible. The filter is located on the Haldex AWD unit above the prop shaft coupling. Volvo recommends removing the driveshaft to do this, but users report being able to access the filter without removing it. It will be tight. Torque the M5 allen head bolts snugly, to 5nm. Use the syringe to fill the unit with fluid. Replace the plug when continuous flow out of the hole changes into single drops. . Go for a test drive. Top off fluid level and replace plug when continuous flow out of the hold changes into single drops.
