Your BMW's steering rack bellows serve two primary purposes:
-
Keep water, dirt, and other contaminants from destroying the inner tie rod ball joint
-
Keep water, dirt, and other contaminants from damaging the steering rack seals
As you can see, this component is not some random piece of rubber that serves no real purpose. We recommend replacing this bellow as soon as a crack or any other damage that can cause contaminants from getting inside. We also encourage replacing this bellow when installing a new inner tie rod to ensure proper seal and fitment. It is not uncommon for this bellow to dry rot with age and start to crack on its own.
