Tension struts are a common wear item on higher mileage vehicles. The inner bushing is a common failure point due to extraneous bushing deflection. The inner bushing is prone to tearing a leaking which will allow for significant play in the front suspension along with knocking noises while turning or traveling over bumps. In addition to bushing failure the outer ball joint, which is integrated into the arm itself, can also wear out. Play in this joint is also critical to check for.
